Union County Public Works team membersUnion County’s Public Works Operations team took home several awards at the 19th Annual N.C. American Water & Wastewater Association Operations Challenge November 3-6 in Raleigh, N.C. The Operations Challenge is a series of events in which four-person teams, along with their coach, compete in events that challenge their skills in various wastewater-related activities.

Union County’s team is made up of Matt Hargett, Hayden Hunter, Jonathan Jordan, Aaron Winans, and Paul Walther.

The team finished first overall and won the following events:

  • Collections System Event (Time of 141.56 seconds) – this event simulates the repair of a damaged 8-inch PVC sewer pipe, and the connection of a 4-inch sewer lateral, using an Inserta Tee fitting, while the 8-inch pipe remains in service. The event also simulates the installation and programming of an automated Hach AS950 composite sampler, to collect a composite sample of the “flow” in the 8-inch pipe.
  • Maintenance Event (Time of 639.59 seconds) – this event simulates the failure of one pump in a duplex lift station, and the full servicing of a trailer mounted Godwin DriPrime NC80 pump. Once the pump service is complete, the Godwin Pump is temporarily connected to the lift station, and programmed for automatic operation with the use of a level probe.
  • Matt Hargett had the Quickest Hand Saw Cut in North Carolina at 8 seconds.
  • Paul Walther had the Quickest Hole Saw Cut in North Carolina at 22 seconds.

The team’s performance reflects their expertise and commitment to providing top-notch water and wastewater services to Union County.

Their first-place finish qualified them to compete in the National Operations Challenge in October 2020 in New Orleans.
