At its regular meeting on Monday, December 7, 2020, the Union County Board of Commissioners elected Richard Helms Chair of the Board and Dennis Rape Vice Chair of the Board. Helms has served on the Board since 2012. This is his third time serving as Chairman. Rape was elected to office in 2018. He has served as Vice Chairman since December 2018.
"I appreciate the support of my fellow Commissioners electing me as Chairman of the Board," Helms said. "I'm encouraged by the opportunity to work with County staff to make a difference in the lives of Union County residents through our many programs, services and facilities. Union County's strong leadership team brings a level of commitment that is unprecedented and I look forward to working with them."
At the Board meeting on Dec. 7, newly-elected Commissioner David Williams took his oath of office virtually and was sworn in by his wife, who is a sworn public notary. Williams was elected to the Board in November 2020. He and his family live in Indian Trail.
The Chair and Vice Chair are elected annually for a term of one year. The Chairman presides at all Board meetings. The Vice Chairman acts in the absence of the Chairman. The Board of County Commissioners is the legislative and governing body of Union County. It consists of five members elected at-large. Commissioners serve four-year staggered terms.
