The Expansion of Naloxone Distribution in Union County

Naloxone (commonly referred to as Narcan®) works to reverse overdoses by blocking the effects of opioids to prevent death. Naloxone has no effect in people who have not taken opioids.

Naloxone Distribution

Since Jan. 1, 2023, Union County Human Services has distributed over 2,930 kits to 20+ community partners.

In 2025 year to date, we have distributed 1,227 kits. Some locations this has been distributed to include: Daymark Recovery, Union County EMS, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Childcare Centers, UCPS Nurses and Wingate University.

Naloxone Expansion in Our Community

Expansion of Naloxone distribution has had a positive effect in our community in the last few years as the opioid overdose death rate has gone from 25.3 (out of 100,000 residents) in 2023 to 9.8 (out of 100,000 residents) in 2024. This highlights a 61% decrease in opioid overdose deaths in Union County from 2023 to 2024.

This data captures the count of times naloxone was administered in the past four years. The graph shows a decline from 2022 to 2024 with 245 in 2022, 123 in 2023, 59 in 2024, and then an increase in 2025 (year to date) with 142.

This is the past 4 years of most recent data. For count of Naloxone with improved response there were 159 in 2022, 88 in 2023, 28 in 2024, and 64 in 2025 YTD.

This data captures the count of times naloxone was administered and the patient had an improved response. In 2022, 159 had an improved response with 88 in 2023 and 28 in 2024. In 2025, year to date, 64 counts of naloxone were administered with an improved response.

This EMS Naloxone data only includes people who interacted with EMS. Due to this data being from one source, the naloxone counts will be underestimated.
