The Union County Planning Department includes transportation planning functions. The county transportation planner is responsible for site plan review and transportation input into proposed development in the unincorporated portions of the county. The transportation planner also participates in countywide and regional transportation planning by coordinating with the NCDOT and transportation planning organizations. The western two-thirds of the county is represented by the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization, while the eastern third is represented by the Rocky River Rural Planning Organization.
