Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States, killing more than 3,800 individuals annually. CO is a colorless, odorless gas. Because you cannot see, taste or smell it, CO can kill you before you know it is there. Keep an eye out for symptoms like headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness.
If your CO alarm sounds, get yourself and others outdoors to an area with clean air immediately and call 911. Do not drive a motor vehicle and stay away from the area until it is determined to be safe. To prevent CO-related illnesses and fatalities, install a CO detector/alarm.
Escape Plan
Once a smoke alarm sounds, you may have less than two minutes to escape a home fire. Having a home fire escape plan is critical. Knowing how to get out quickly and where to meet can save lives. Create a fire escape plan using this template.
Be sure to:
- Identify two ways out of every room.
- Choose a meeting place outside.
- Practice your plan at least twice a year.
Close Bedroom Doors
Closing bedroom doors at night is a critical, and often missed, tactic in the event of a fire. A closed door slows the spread of fire and smoke. It can also reduce temperatures, increase oxygen levels, and give you critical extra minutes to escape.
