Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program

The Union County Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provides free nutrition and breastfeeding support to eligible community members.

How WIC Food Benefits Work

  • WIC food benefits are added to an electronic benefit account at the WIC office

  • Families receive an eWIC card

  • The eWIC card is used at approved grocery stores to purchase WIC-approved foods

Who Can Participate

WIC services are available to:

  • Pregnant women

  • Breastfeeding women

  • Postpartum women

  • Infants

  • Children up to age 5

Participation Requirements

To participate in WIC, a person must:

  • Live in North Carolina

  • Have a family income below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level

  • Be at nutritional risk, as determined by a nutritionist at the WIC office

    • There is no cost for this nutrition assessment

Automatic Income Eligibility

A person automatically meets the income requirement if they receive:

  • Medicaid

  • Work First Families Assistance (TANF)

  • North Carolina Food and Nutrition Services (Food Stamps)

Fill Out an Online Referral 

Complete the WIC online referral form to request services.

After a referral is submitted, someone from our office will contact you within five business days.


Your WIC Appointment

When you come to apply for WIC, please bring the items listed below for yourself and anyone applying for WIC.

Proof of Identification

(Only one item is needed for each person.)

Examples include:

  • U.S.-issued driver’s license

  • Social Security card

  • Current work or school ID

  • Current Medicaid card

  • Military ID

  • Birth certificate

  • Immunization record

  • For infants: hospital crib card, ID bracelet, or Mother’s Verification of Facts form


Proof of Residence

(Only one item is needed to show North Carolina residency.)

Examples include:

  • Current utility bill

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Current Medicaid card or presumptive eligibility form

  • Bank statement

  • Current rental or mortgage receipt

  • North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles ID card

Proof of Income

(Required for all household members who have income.)

Examples include:

  • Current Medicaid card

  • Current North Carolina Food and Nutrition Services card

  • Certification letter for Food and Nutrition Services

  • Recent pay stubs

  • If self-employed: most recent tax return or proof of earnings for the past 12 months

  • Letter from employer showing gross income and how often you are paid

  • Unemployment benefit letter or notice

Important Information

To qualify for WIC, applicants must:

  • Meet income eligibility requirements, and

  • Have a medical or nutritional risk identified

These requirements are reviewed during your WIC appointment at the WIC office.

With some exceptions, each person applying for WIC must be present at the time of application.

  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Fiber
  • Vitamins

Foods for Infants (Birth – 12 months):

  • Mother’s breastmilkA woman feeding a bottle to a baby
  • Infant formula
  • Infant cereal
  • Infant fruits and vegetables
  • Infant meats (for fully breastfed infants only)

Foods for Women and Children:

  • Whole grain cereal
  • Whole grain bread, brown rice, whole-wheat and soft-corn tortillas
  • Milk or soy-based beverage
  • Cheese
  • Tofu
  • Eggs
  • Fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen or canned)
  • Fruits and vegetable juices
  • Canned tuna or salmon (for exclusively breastfeeding women only)

Note: Women who exclusively breastfeed their babies receive larger quantities of foods

Special Formulas and Supplements

Special formulas or nutritional supplements may be available for women and children with certain medical conditions.

Before WIC can provide a special formula or supplement:

  • A prescription from a physician or health care provider is required
