Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Free Income Tax Preparation
Don’t let the burden of filing your income tax return overwhelm you. We have volunteers that have been certified through the Internal Revenue Service that will prepare your federal and state income tax returns at no cost to you.
Eligibility
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- People who generally make $70,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers.

Call to Schedule Appointment
Starting Wednesday, January 28th, 2026, call 704-296-4312 to schedule a VITA appointment. Calls are accepted Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Pick Up Your Packet
After scheduling your appointment, you can pick up your prep packet at the Human Services drive-thru window, 2330 Concord Ave., Monroe.
Hours of Drive-Thru Window:
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Additional instructions are provided in the packet.
Return Completed Packet at Appointment
At your scheduled appointment a photo ID and your Social Security card are required.
A certified VITA preparer will review your paperwork and will prepare the tax forms during your appointment.
You'll sign the return and the site coordinator will then complete the electronic filing process.
Please remember, if you are filing jointly, both individuals must be present at the appointment.
