The Union County WIC Program hosts a monthly breastfeeding support group in collaboration with the QC BEANS. A lactation consultant and breastfeeding peer counselors are present and cover topics such as latching, positioning, baby cues and behavior, growth spurts, returning to work/school, and other breastfeeding concerns. The support group is held the last Wednesday of each month from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in the WIC area of the Human Services building.

The North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) provides free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings and follow-up to eligible women.

BCCCP is here to help women ages 40 to 64 who are financially eligible to receive preventive health services which include:

• Breast exam
• Mammogram
• Pap smear
• Education
• Referral

Child Care Health Consultants offer expert information, resources and referrals to local child care providers. Through onsite and telephone consultation, health education and technical assistance, CCHCs work with individual child care facilities to help create environments that best support the healthy growth and development of young children.

 CCHC’s partner with child care providers to:

• Assess health and safety needs and practices in the child care facility. Work with the Center to help achieve their goals.
• Develop strategies for inclusion of children with special health care needs.
• Establish and review health policies and procedures.
• Manage and prevent injuries and infectious diseases.
• Review immunization records.
• Connect families with community health resources and medical homes.
• Provide health education and training for staff members, families and children.
• Interpret NC Child Care Rules and National Health and Safety Performance Standards to provide guidance to child care programs.
• CCHCs are not responsible for regulating child care facilities.

Union County Health Promotions staff are committed to increasing education and awareness of the harmful effects of illegal and harmful substances that can lead to poisoning, accidental overdoses and preventable deaths and injuries.

Union County Health Promotions staff are involved with several community initiatives to educate the community on the harmful, long-lasting effects of tobacco, e-cigarettes and vaping. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance and found in most forms of tobacco inhalants.  

The rising numbers of our youth using e-cigarettes or vaping products is alarming. We are currently partnering with our local schools to educate students, parents and the community on the highly addictive and harmful substances in these products that are easily obtained by our youth today. We also want the community to be aware of the resources available to them that encourage tobacco cessation.
