Authority to Establish: Chapter 160D of the North Carolina General Statutes. Must comply with the Open Meetings Law

At its regular meeting of Monday, May 15, 2023, the Union County Board of Commissioners adopted an Ordinance Approving Text Amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance of Union County, North Carolina and Naming a Land Use Board as the Planning Board which will also Perform the Duties of a Board of Adjustment, effective July 1, 2023.   

The Land Use Board consists of seven (7) regular members and two (2) alternates, all appointed at large by the Board of Commissioners.  All regular and alternate members must reside in Union County and no more than two (2) members may reside in the same municipality  A land use board member must also have the ability to ably perform the types of duties required of a member of both a planning board pursuant to NCGS 160D-301 (including, without limitation, advisory decisions), as well as duties of a member of a board performing the duties of a board of adjustment, in accordance with NCGS 160D-302 (including, without limitation, quasi-judicial decisions).  The initial appointments and terms are: (i) three regular members for a term of three (3) years; (ii) two regular members and one alternate for a term of two (2) years; and (iii) two regular members and one (1) alternate for a term of one year.  Thereafter, all appointments shall be for three (3) year terms.  

MEETING DATES AND TIME:  The Land Use Board meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm in the Commissioners’ Board Room, First Floor, Union County Government Center, 500 North Main Street, Monroe, NC 28112.

COMPENSATION:  $50 per meeting and travel reimbursement, based on the current IRS rate, from the members’ home to the Union County Government Center.
