COVID-19 Public Works Information

On May 30, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order 142, which extends temporary suspensions of water disconnects due to non-payment and late fee penalties through July 29, 2020. Union County Public Works is providing an additional extension until July 31, 2020 to ensure all customers have access to safe drinking water during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning with bills due August 1, 2020, Union County Public Works will return to normal billing and collection procedures:

  • No late payment fee will be assessed for any residential or non-residential service until August 1, 2020. This does not apply to irrigation service. All new and unpaid charges will accumulate.
  • No residential or non-residential service will be disconnected for nonpayment until August 1, 2020. This does not apply to irrigation service. All new and unpaid charges will accumulate.
  • UCPW provides payment plan options for customers who are not able to pay their full bill amount. If you need a payment plan please click here to complete our Payment Plan Request Form. For more information, contact Public Works Customer Service at 704-296-4210 or via email.
  • If your water is currently cutoff, contact Public Works Customer Service at 704-296-4210 or via email for more information on reconnection options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still have to pay the charges on the water and sewer bills I receive through July 31, 2020?
Yes. We encourage you to pay your water and sewer bill during this time. Water and sewer bills are still due and service charges will accumulate if unpaid. Late fees and water cutoffs which would normally occur due to nonpayment will not be charged during this period. Late fees will be charged for irrigation service.

Can my water service be disconnected once the Executive Order is concluded on July 31, 2020?
Yes. Unpaid bills may lead to service disconnection following the termination of the Executive Order 124. If you can’t pay the full amount of your bill, we encourage you to pay what you can. How long will late fees not be assessed for water and sewer bills?
Late fees will not be assessed water and sewer service charges between March 18 and July 31. Bills due after July 31 will be assessed a late fee if payment is received after the due date on the bill. Late fees will be charged for irrigation service.

Are payment plans available if I can’t pay the full amount?

Emergency Numbers

Please call 704-296-4210 immediately to report a sewer backup, a sewer overflow or other utility-related EMERGENCY. On call service is available 24 hours per day for emergency situations only.

Water outages due to non-payment are generally not considered emergencies. Please verify that your account has not been disconnected for non-payment before reporting a water outage. You can check your account balance and payment status here or by calling 704-292-2537. Please have your account number available.

If your water service has been disconnected for non-payment, service will only be restored when the total balance on the account has been paid in full. In order to be reconnected the same day, payments for re-connection must be made during normal business hours, but prior to 4:00 p.m. Service will be restored the following business day when payments are made after 4:00 p.m.

Union County Public Works is the water and wastewater utility service provider to the unincorporated areas in Union County and all of the municipalities, except Monroe, Marshville and Wingate. Public Works operates a countywide water and wastewater system solely funded by user fees and is not funded by tax dollars.
