Union County Veterans Treatment Court (or VTC) is a specialized court to help veterans who are facing criminal charges address substance use disorders and/or mental illness through treatment and rehabilitation rather than traditional jail or prison sentences. The goal is to give back to those who have served and need help.

It is an intensive program that uses a collaborative approach among multiple agencies, including the district judge's office, the district attorney's office, the public defender's office, state probation, treatment providers, county veteran services, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The program includes various requirements, such as checking in with the coordinator daily during the initial phases, random drug testing at least twice per week, attending special VTC court sessions every two weeks, completing treatment, and engaging in prosocial activities.

Incentives for completing the program include possible dismissal or expungement of charges, early release from probation, and reduced or no jail time.

  • Has served in the United States military in any branch at least one (1) day successive to basic training
  • Have eligible pending criminal charges that carry the possibility of active jail/prison time
  • Meet clinical criteria for either substance/alcohol addiction and/or a serious mental health disorder to include (but not be limited to) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Military Sexual Trauma (MST)

  • Agree to the terms of the program

Certain criminal offenses and/or prior convictions are presumed to be not eligible to include murder/manslaughter, sexual offenses, or violent felonies involving children. However, please note that all potential cases are reviewed and approved for entry into the program by the VTC team.
