Union County does not build or maintain roadways. In North Carolina, road maintenance of public roadways is not a function of county government, but of state and city government. If you have noticed an issue with a public road in Union County and would like to report it for repairs, this page will help you know how to determine if the road is maintained by the state or a city, so that you can submit a report to the proper governmental entity that is responsible for repairs.

Please note that Union County is not involved in this process. Roadway repair information is provided on our website as a courtesy to county residents.

State Maintained Roadways

You can determine if a public road is state-maintained by checking NCDOT's map. If the street is maintained by the state, then report the roadway problem to NCDOT using their Contact Us webform. While some roads are more obviously state-maintained  - due to road signage or the road name - many two-lane roads and even some residential streets are also maintained by NCDOT. Please refer to the map linked above to determine if a roadway is NCDOT's responsibility.

If you have any questions about NCDOT maintenance responsibility, or to speak with an NCDOT staff member in our area, call the local NCDOT maintenance office at 704-218-5140.

Roads Maintained by Cities & Towns

If a road is not maintained by the state, it is likely maintained by a town/city. Visit our Municipalities page to find links to each town's website and to determine which town has jurisdiction for a specific address.

Private Roads

A small number of roads are privately maintained. These roads may be owned by private landowners, homeowner's associations or developers. No government entity is responsible for the maintenance of these roadways.
