Union County Parks and Recreation is adding a new signs to park benches as part of a nationwide effort to help people feel more connected, one conversation at a time. Union County is the first county in North Carolina to officially launch "Happy to Chat" benches, which invite park visitors to stop, say hello, and have a friendly conversation. The first sign is located at Cane Creek Park, the County's 1,050 acre park near Waxhaw.

When someone sits on a bench with a "Happy to Chat" sign, it means they are open to talking with others. A simple chat can help someone feel seen, heard and less alone.

"We are excited to bring these benches to our parks," said Jim Chaffin, Union County Parks and Recreation Director. "They give neighbors a chance to meet, talk and make real connections."

The project was created in partnership with Team Hope, a local organization that works to prevent suicide and build stronger communities.

Spending time in nature, in parks and with others have mental, physical and social benefits. These benches provide one more way to connect, share a smile and brighten someone's day.
