As Union County continues to celebrate the historic 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the County is proud to participate in the America 250 celebration through a series of patriotic displays that honor our shared history, recognize local communities, and inspire pride for future generations.

During the evening and early morning hours, Human Services is lit with red, white, and blue on all sides of the main entrance, creating a tribute to the nation's ideals of freedom, opportunity and service. The patriotic lighting will serve as a daily reminder of the values that have united Americans for 250 years. 

Constructed in 1886, the historic Union County Courthouse in downtown Monroe will feature American flags throughout the weekend of July 4, creating a field of red, white and blue. Patriotic bunting has been draped along the three balcony-facing sides of the historic building. The traditional red, white, and blue bunting reflects an American custom of decorating civic buildings during moments of celebration. Together, the bunting and flag displays will transform the courthouse into a focal point for America 250 commemorations within the County.

These displays and installations have been placed by the County's Facilities and Fleet Management team, whose efforts have helped bring this patriotic vision to life. Union County is grateful for their work in preparing these meaningful tributes for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Through educational programs, events, and community engagement opportunities and reflection, the County's America 250 initiatives aim to connect the nation's founding principles with the work being done today to build stronger communities for future generations. As we commemorate 250 years of American history, we also celebrate the people, institutions and communities that continue to shape the nation's story. These displays offer an opportunity for residents to reflect on our shared heritage, honor those who came before us, and look forward to the next chapter of American democracy.
