Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

When you are enrolled in VA health care, you obtain a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) which you use to check in to your appointments at VA medical centers. You may also use this card to get discounts offered to Veterans at many stores, businesses and restaurants.

Union County's Inaugural 'Almost Home' Veterans Resource Fair Draws Community Together

Union County Veterans Services hosted its inaugural Almost Home Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, May 30, at the Simpson Events Center in Monroe. The free community event brought together veterans and family members with 20 resource partners spanning local, state and federal organizations, connecting veterans with the benefits and support they've earned.

Resource booths covered VA benefits and claims assistance, employment and career transition services, mental and physical health care, and community support programs. Veterans Services Officers were on-site to assist with basic claims and answer benefits questions one-on-one throughout the event.

Vendors stayed engaged throughout the fair, with several noting they valued the chance to connect directly with veterans and network with other organizations serving the same community. For attendees, the event offered more than access to resources in one place, it created space for veterans to connect with one another and share the camaraderie that comes from being around others who understand their service.

Almost Home takes its name from a reality many veterans know well. Military service may end, but the transition to civilian life often continues for years. The event was designed to meet veterans in that space, with the people and organizations best positioned to help with navigating VA benefits, mental and physical health, employment, and stability.

"For many veterans, the journey doesn't end upon separation. Veterans Services' goal is to help veterans and their families navigate this transition," said Michelle Marcano, Union County Veterans Services Director. "Almost Home is our commitment to making sure that veterans in Union County have the support they need and deserve."

The event opened with remarks from Union County Veterans Services and local officials, and a casual lunch was provided for all attendees. Union County Veterans Services confirmed plans to make Almost Home an annual event, with early discussions already underway for next year's resource lineup, layout improvements, and additional giveaways.

Almost Home reflects the county's ongoing commitment to ensuring that those who served have access to the support, resources and community connections they need.
