Union County Burn Ban Lifted

Post Date:05/08/2026 8:58 AM

Burn smart, burn safe announcement from Union County Emergency Services.Union County Fire Marshal Jon Williams has lifted the local burn ban after the North Carolina Forest Service lifted the statewide ban for all remaining counties, including Union. With the burn ban lifted, residents may resume open burning where permitted. However, fire officials continue to urge the community to use caution and prioritize safety when burning outdoors.

“While conditions have improved enough to lift the burn ban, we want to remind everyone to follow safety guidelines and state laws when burning,” Williams said. “It's important to remember that we are still experiencing drought conditions. Outdoor burning should always be done responsibly, and with the ongoing drought, the risk of fires spread remains higher than usual."

Safe Open Burning Reminders:

  • Follow State Laws. North Carolina law only allows the burning of natural vegetation, such as leaves, branches, and other plant growth. If it doesn’t grow, don’t burn it.
  • Prevent Injury and Property Damage. Always keep a safe distance from structures, monitor wind conditions, never leave a fire unattended, and fully extinguish it before leaving.
  • Burn permits are required for open burning and are available online for free.

Officials also remind residents that due to ongoing drought conditions, water conservation measures remain in place. For more information on open burning regulations and to obtain a burn permit, visit our burning regulations webpage.
