Post Date:05/05/2026 10:31 AM

Errol Wedra Sworn In As Union County CommissionerThe Union County Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Errol Wedra to a vacant Board seat at its May 4 meeting. Clerk to the Board Lynn West administered the oath of office to Wedra immediately after the appointment. The vacancy arose after Commissioner Gary Sides resigned on March 31 due to health reasons prior to his passing. Under North Carolina General Statute 153A-27, the Board had 60 days from Sides' resignation to fill the vacancy by appointing a qualified individual from the same political party who also resides in the county. The Union County Republican Party recommended Wedra to fill the seat, and the Board unanimously approved the appointment.

"No one can replace Gary Sides. He was a champion for those without a voice. We can only hope to honor his legacy by ensuring that every citizen is seen, heard and treated with dignity," Wedra said. "Thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve the people of Union County and the honor to serve this board and with the dedicated staff here in Union County."

Wedra has more than 32 years of law enforcement experience and currently serves in a senior leadership role with a local police department. He holds a master’s degree in justice administration and is a graduate of the UNC School of Government’s Municipal and County Administration Course. In 2014, Wedra and his wife chose to make Union County their home, seeking a community rooted in shared values and a strong quality of life for their family.

"I've known Errol Wedra now for a few years and it's my belief that Errol Wedra is a man of high character, that values what makes Union County special," Chairman Brian Helms said. "He's demonstrated a commitment to public service, thoughtful decision making and a willingness to learn. At a time when our county is facing significant challenges and pressures from growth and budget priorities, I think it's critical we have a commissioner on this board who values long-term planning over short-term fixes, and I believe Errol Wedra can approach these challenges with common sense, accountability and a focus on what's best for the community."

Because the vacancy occurred on March 31, 2026, more than 60 days before the next general election, and with more than two years remaining in the term, Wedra will serve on the Board through December 7, 2026. Voters will then elect a Commissioner in the November 2026 general election to fill the remainder of Sides' term, which runs through December 4, 2028.

The five-member Board of County Commissioners is the legislative and governing body of Union County. Commissioners are elected at-large and serve four-year staggered terms. Learn more about the Board of County Commissioners.
