Families now have a new way to support young readers at the Union County Library, which has introduced the Early Chapters collection designed for children transitioning from picture books to independent reading. The books within this collection feature short chapters, engaging illustrations and vocabulary appropriate for readers ages 7-9 or grades 2-3. These books help children build confidence as they develop reading skills and begin exploring longer stories.

"As children grow, the Children's collections expand to include picture books, early readers, and beginning chapter books that support developing literacy skills and growing independence. For older children, we offer a wide selection of chapter books, graphic novels, and nonfiction titles that spark curiosity, support success in school, and nurture a lifelong love of reading," said Nina Chaffin, Union County Library Director.

The collection is a part of the Library's Children's Services offerings, which provide books, programs and resources to support early literacy. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit any of the four library locations to find these new collections and to sign up their children for library cards. During the enrollment process, parents and guardians may choose to limit their child's access to materials within the library. The Early Reader library card allows card holders to check out all items from early collections. The next card is Juvenile Only, which allows card holders to check out items from all Children's Collections, including Juvenile Fiction. The third option for children is a Juvenile card, which allows card holders to check out items from all library collections. Library cards for children 12 years old and younger must be linked to the library account of a parent or legal guardian, but these cards allow readers to enjoy the experience of checking out materials. Children's cards also allow for a child to check out materials while visiting the library with a guardian or caretaker.

Families can learn more about the Early Chapters collection and available Children's Services by visiting the Children's Services webpage or by speaking with a library staff member.  Visit your nearest library location to sign up for a library card today.
