Post Date:01/06/2026 1:22 PM

Update (Friday, Jan. 16): The story below has been updated to reflect that the scheduled burn at the landfill has been rescheduled from Wednesday, Jan. 7 to Monday, Jan. 20.

Union County Solid Waste has hired a professional contractor to clear a section of vegetation at the Union County Landfill, located at 2125 Austin Chaney Road in Wingate. As part of this work, the contractor will conduct a controlled burn of vegetation on Monday, Jan. 20. Residents in the general area and visitors to the landfill may witness smoke originating from the site on Jan. 20 and for the next few days.

The Union County Fire Marshal’s Office is aware of the controlled burn, which the North Carolina Forest Service has permitted. The controlled burn has been deemed permissible based on forecasted weather conditions.

The landfill will remain open during its regular hours throughout the controlled burn exercise, which will occur in a remote section of the site. To learn more about the services available at the Union County Landfill and its hours of operation, please visit this page.
