MONROE, N.C. (Dec. 9, 2025)
– At its regular meeting on Dec. 8, 2025, the Union County Board of Commissioners elected a new chair and vice chair to lead the Board for the next year. Brian Helms is now serving as chair of the Board. Chairman Helms was elected to the Board of Commissioners in November 2022, and previously served as vice chair. He is a lifelong resident of Union County, and has been employed by a local manufacturing company for more than 25 years.

"I want to thank all of you for putting your faith in me to serve as chair. It's not a responsibility I take lightly," Brian Helms said to his colleagues at the end of the meeting.

Commissioner Christina Helms was elected vice chair of the Board. She was sworn in as Commissioner in December 2024. A Union County resident since fifth grade, Helms was first elected to public service in 2012 as a member of the Union County Board of Education. Although the chair and vice chair share the same last name, they are not related.

Clerk to the Board Lynn West administered the oaths of office following the election.

The chair and vice chair are elected annually for a term of one year. The chair presides at all Board meetings, and the vice chair acts in the absence of the chair. The five-member Board of County Commissioners is the legislative and governing body of Union County. Commissioners are elected at-large and serve four-year staggered terms. More information about the Board of County Commissioners can be found on the Board of Commissioners webpage.
