
Union County 911 Telecommunicator Stephanie Laney is being recognized with the Lifesaver Award for her heroic actions in helping save a caller from a life-threatening situation.
While on duty, Laney answered a 911 call from a woman who was trapped inside a vehicle that had caught fire following a motor vehicle accident. The panicked caller said she was trapped and couldn't open the doors. Remaining calm and focused, Laney quickly assessed the situation and provided the caller with several suggestions for the caller to try to break a window to escape the burning vehicle.
Thanks to Laney’s quick thinking, steadfast instructions and calm demeanor, the caller was able to free herself before first responders arrived.
"Her ability to remain calm under pressure and provide effective direction undoubtedly made a difference in the outcome of this call," said County Manager Brian Matthews. "We're proud to recognize her with this well-deserved honor."
The Lifesaver Award is presented to employees whose actions directly contribute to saving a life. Laney’s composure and quick thinking in an emergency exemplify the critical role 911 telecommunicators play in life-threatening situations.
