Union County’s Finance department received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting (PAFR Award) for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2024, by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This distinction recognizes governments that successfully communicate their financial information to residents in a clear, accessible and engaging way.

A panel of independent reviewers evaluated the County’s report based on standards including reader appeal, understandability, distribution, and other elements such as the County’s type and size and the document’s creativity and usefulness—earning high scores in each category.

"Overall, this is an excellent PAFR that is well-designed, visually appealing, and rich with relevant information," the reviewers said. "It provides stakeholders with the clarity and insight needed to support informed decision-making."

The reviewers continued to say, "The report is engaging and well-structured, effectively utilizing facts about Union County to create a practical context for the financial information presented. Its visual elements, including graphics and artwork, enhance its overall appeal. The content is concise and focused, maintaining readers' interest throughout."

At their regular meeting on Oct. 6, the Board of County Commissioners recognized the Finance department, led by Beverly Liles, Finance Director.

“This award truly shows the County’s ongoing commitment to transparency and effectively sharing our financial impact with our residents,” Liles said. “We are proud to be honored by the GFOA and will continue to use this meaningful resource to foster trust in our community."

The Government Finance Officers Association provides best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 25,000 members and the communities it serves.
