Union County has added an average of more than 5,000 people per year for the past quarter-century. Ongoing development pressure is projected to continue, expanding from the Charlotte urbanized area into more rural areas and placing pressure on environmental resources, rural character, and agricultural operations.
The
Rural Land Use Plan, proposed in early 2024, aims to provide flexibility to property owners while protecting the environment, rural character, and agricultural operations for the future. Since October 2024, a group of residents appointed by the Union County Board of Commissioners has been working with County staff to develop the plan as a guide for future land use decisions in rural parts of the County.
The draft plan is now ready for public review and feedback. The draft plan is expected to be presented to the Union County Land Use Board on Tuesday, Oct. 21, and to the Union County Board of Commissioners on Monday, Nov. 17. The Board of Commissioners has the ultimate authority to adopt the plan and/or to make changes to the plan.
