400x400-CITA-MagerOn the morning of May 23, 2025, a Ukrainian woman staying at the Cane Creek Park campground was in an unfamiliar and challenging situation. After an argument with her boyfriend, she was left stranded at the park with only $120 and the daunting task of traveling home to Washington, D.C., with no reliable transportation. She spoke little English and had no immediate support nearby.

Park Ranger Kevin Mager stepped in to help. Kevin arranged a ride for her to get to a Greyhound bus station in Monroe and showed her how to pay for the ride and the bus ticket. Understanding the strain she was under, Kevin also assisted with packing her belongings. He provided snacks and drinks for the trip.

"Kevin could have simply enforced our policies and asked this individual to depart the campground at checkout time," said Park Superintendent Jared Steele. "He took the extra time and used appropriate resources to ensure she had a good and safe experience after what she encountered the night before. She was very thankful for the assistance and hugged all of the staff members on site before she left with the Uber driver. I appreciate Kevin's desire to take charge of the situation and handle this type of situation professionally."

For his compassion, quick thinking and willingness to go beyond his regular duties, Kevin has been honored with Union County’s Caught in the Act Award, which recognizes Union County employees who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to their work, often going above and beyond their daily responsibilities to make a difference.

“Kevin’s actions are a perfect example of the heart and dedication our employees bring to their work every day,” said County Manager Brian Matthews. “He didn’t just see someone in need - he took initiative to make sure she was safe and supported. That’s what service to the community looks like.”

Matthews, Deputy County Manager Patrick Niland, Assistant County Manager Clayton Voignier, and Parks & Recreation leadership surprised Mager with the Award at the park on Sept. 10, 2025. As the recipient of this quarterly Award, Mager will receive a $250 bonus and is eligible for the annual Caught in the Act Employee of the Year Award.
