Jared Steele news thumbnailUnion County Parks Superintendent Jared Steele has been recognized as a local hero through the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners' (NCACC) Heroic Hands initiative. The program, launched earlier this year, celebrates the often-unseen yet deeply impactful work of county employees across the state. The initiative honors one individual in each county across North Carolina, recognizing local public servants who have made meaningful impacts in their community.

During the NCACC's 118th Annual Conference on August 21 in Pitt County, Steele was honored, alongside community leaders from across the state. County leaders nominated him for his exceptional service, leadership and teamwork.

"Jared's contributions reach far beyond the parks he manages," said Union County Manager Brian Matthews. "His work reflects the profound difference County employees make every day in the lives of our residents and communities."

Steele has been employed by Union County Government for 25 years. As Park Superintendent, Steele leads goals and strategies for County parks, and oversees programs and services. However, it's his contributions outside of his role that have earned him much-deserved recognition.

One of Steele's most notable contributions is his role on the Rural Land Use Plan Committee, where he helped develop a guiding document for land use decisions in Union County's rural areas. His efforts ensure a balanced approach that supports landowners, farmers, and essential community services while preserving natural resources and wildlife.

Steele also dedicates his time to the Union County Firefighters' Burned Children's Fund, where he goes beyond financial support to actively engage in fundraising, awareness efforts, and collection drives. His involvement helps provide non-medical assistance for children and their families while advancing burn prevention programs throughout the community.

His collaboration with Union County Emergency Services underscores his dedication to safety and preparedness. Steele has helped coordinate officer training for suspect tracking, facilitated underwater drone training, and strengthened cross-departmental emergency response strategies, particularly in Union County Parks.

In addition, Steele's commitment to conservation shines through his partnership with the N.C. Forest Service, where he has supported the implementation of controlled burns at Cane Creek Park. These efforts promote the regrowth of native plants and flowers, reduce invasive species and underbrush, and foster a healthier ecosystem for generations to come.

"I was shocked to be recognized among such inspirational community leaders from across the state," Steele said. "My passion has always been helping and improving my community here at home, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to do that every day through my role with Union County."

The Heroic Hands initiative recognizes the essential work of county staff across North Carolina, from first responders and public health professionals to employees in parks and recreation, finance, public works, and beyond.
