400x400-WIC-BF-Peer-CounselorsUnion County’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program has received national recognition from the USDA with the Premiere Level WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence, one of only five Premiere-level awards granted in North Carolina this year.
Presented annually by the Food and Nutrition Service, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), this award honors local agencies that demonstrate exemplary breastfeeding promotion and support activities. The intent is to highlight successful models that inspire other agencies across the nation to strengthen their own efforts.
Union County’s program stood out for its strong community presence, long-standing partnerships, bilingual peer counselors, and seamless internal referrals within the Human Services Agency. From community baby showers and health fairs to ongoing one-on-one support, the team has gone above and beyond to ensure mothers feel supported in their breastfeeding journey.
Out of hundreds of local WIC agencies nationwide, only 56 were recognized at the Premiere level, making this an incredible milestone for Union County.
