MONROE, N.C. (JULY 24, 2025) –
Recent overflows within the Union County sanitary sewer system impacted two local creeks. An overflow near 1403 Highway 205 in Marshville resulted in an estimated 13,780 gallons of wastewater entering Salem Creek; an overflow of 7500 gallons near a manhole at 921 Southstone Dr. in Stallings entered an unnamed tributary to Hunley Creek.
The overflow in Marshville began at approximately 11:01 a.m. and stopped by 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. Crews have documented two overflows at the location in Stallings. The first overflow began at approximately 11:15 a.m. and stopped by approximately 1:40 p.m. on Monday, July 21; the second overflow began at 1 p.m. and stopped by 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22.
The overflows were not of the magnitude to cause immediate danger to the health of residents or the environment. All pipes, pumps and equipment were operating properly prior to the overflows. Staff determined that the overflow in Marshville were due to a broken force main pipe and that the overflows in Stallings were due to debris in the line, including asphalt.
Per regulatory requirements, the overflow has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
