The Union County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff’s Alcohol Field Enforcement (S.A.F.E.) Unit continues its unwavering commitment to keeping our roadways safe. From January 1 through March 31, 2025, the S.A.F.E. Unit arrested a total of 101 impaired drivers, a reflection of the team's proactive approach and firm stance against impaired driving in all its forms.

While alcohol remains a common factor, the S.A.F.E. Unit is observing a concerning rise in drivers impaired by drugs, both illegal substances and prescription medications. As drug-impaired driving becomes more prevalent, our team continues to adapt. With two certified Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) assigned to the unit, the S.A.F.E. Unit has conducted nearly 30 drug impairment investigations during the first quarter alone. These specialized evaluations are crucial for identifying impairment beyond what traditional field sobriety tests can detect.

But arrests aren’t the only measure of the S.A.F.E. Unit’s work. The team has also conducted multiple speed saturations and sobriety checkpoints across Union County. These operations are designed not just to catch offenders, but to deter unsafe driving habits and educate the public about the real consequences of impaired driving.

Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both, impaired is impaired. Sheriff Cathey urges all drivers to make responsible choices. Utilize ride-share services, call a friend, or find a designated driver. One bad decision behind the wheel can have lifelong consequences.
