MONROE, N.C. (April 2, 2025) – Union County Fire Marshal Jon Williams lifted a local burn ban following the North Carolina Forest Service’s decision to end the statewide burn ban implemented on March 21, 2025.

With the burn ban lifted, residents may resume open burning where permitted; however, fire officials urge the community to continue prioritizing safety when burning outdoors.

“While conditions have improved enough to lift the burn ban, we want to remind everyone to follow safety guidelines and state laws when burning,” Williams said. "Even with the ban lifted, outdoor fires can still be dangerous if improperly handled. Please be cautious and responsible. Outdoor fires are the cause of the majority of our burn injuries in Union County.”

Safe Open Burning Reminders:

  • Follow State Laws. North Carolina law only allows burning natural vegetation, such as leaves, branches, and other plant growth. If it doesn’t grow, don’t burn it.
  • Prevent Injury and Property Damage. Keep a safe distance from structures, monitor wind conditions, and never leave a fire unattended.
  • Burn Permits Are Required. A burn permit is mandatory for open burning and can be obtained for free online.
