Union County Implements No-Tobacco Policy on Human Services Campus

Post Date:01/25/2024 8:57 AM

Starting Feb. 1, 2024, the use of all forms of tobacco products will be prohibited across Union County's Human Services campus (below), including the main building, outdoor areas, and parking lots. The county ordinance for the property at 2330 Concord Avenue in Monroe covers a wide range of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and other smoking alternatives.

Consolidated-Human-Services-Agency Campus-ES-Complex-v2 (1)

The Board of County Commissioners approved the ordinance on Nov. 20, 2023. It meets requirements set by the NC Medicaid Division of Health Benefits and the NC State Local Public Health Accreditation. It aims to not only adhere to these requirements but also create a healthier, tobacco-free environment for both employees and visitors of Union County Human Services.

"The health and well-being of our community is our top priority," says Janet Payne, Director of Human Services. "This ordinance marks a significant step in our commitment to adhering to Medicaid requirements and is a significant step towards creating a healthier environment for everyone who visits or works on our campus.”

In preparation for the ordinance's implementation, informative signs are posted in English and Spanish throughout the campus to clearly communicate the tobacco-free policy and ensure awareness and compliance. All ashtrays and smoking receptacles will be removed from the campus. Union County Human Services is a central location for clients seeking assistance from Public Health, WIC, Medicaid, Social Services, and more.

This is more than just a policy change; it's a movement towards a healthier, cleaner and safer community. QuitlineNC offers free cessation services and resources to support individuals who wish to quit tobacco. This service includes various forms of quit coaching and is accessible to those seeking support in their journey to quit tobacco.

For more information about the Tobacco-Free Campus Ordinance or to access tobacco cessation resources, visit the Tobacco Prevention webpage.
