Transportation Driver Saves Fellow Driver Pinned by His Vehicle

Post Date:07/28/2023 10:34 AM

400x400-News-LS-LundsfordA Union County Transportation driver is being honored with the Lifesaver Award for saving a teammate in a serious emergency. Late afternoon on Friday, June 9, driver Jeff Lunsford was finishing his shift for the day and in the department's parking lot when he heard and saw a teammate in distress. A fellow driver's van was rolling and when the driver tried to stop it, he got pinned between his van and a parked vehicle. Lunsford immediately jumped into action and into the driver's seat of the van to reverse it away from his colleague. He immediately called 911 and the Transportation dispatch office.

"Without Jeff's vigilance and quick response, this situation could have been much worse," said County Manager Brian Matthews. "Our Transportation drivers are committed to providing safe and quality service with empathy and compassion. In this case, Jeff went far above that service to potentially save the life of a colleague in need.”

Lunsford solicited help from another colleague, Ronald Talley. Both men remained calm while providing emergency services personnel with details of the situation so the appropriate parties could be notified to ensure the proper resources were deployed. They each followed their transportation safety training.

Lunsford supervisor, Brandon Earp, nominated him for the Lifesaver Award. “Jeff exemplifies the values of Union County Transportation, and we are all grateful for his handling of this situation,” Earp said.

Union County's Management Team recognized Lunsford with the Lifesaver Award on July 25, 2023. The Lifesaver Award is given to county employees whose selfless actions result in saving someone's life.
