New Program Provides Free Waste Disposal for County Residents

Post Date:06/30/2023 3:57 PM

400x400-TrashPassUnion County residents may now dispose of limited amounts of household garbage at any Union County waste and recycling convenience centers for free. County residents may take advantage of the new "Trash Pass" program effective July 1, 2023, by showing proof of county residency, such as a motor vehicle registration, current government-issued ID or current utility bill.

The program will operate as follows:

  • Bring your bagged household garbage to the Austin Chaney Landfill or to one of Union County's Waste and Recycling Convenience Centers during regular operating hours. In addition to the site at the county landfill, there are five convenience center sites located throughout Union County. Locations and hours of operation are on the Waste and Recycling webpage. Residents may dispose of up to 10 standard, 13-gallon trash bags or five larger trash bags per day at a convenience center.
  • Show proof of county residency to the site attendant. Your car registration, current government-issued ID, or a current utility bill in your name with your current address may be used to prove county residency.
  • Pay only for excess household waste. Household waste not covered by the new “Trash Pass” program is subject to disposal fees of $1 per standard household bag or $2 per larger bag (14 gallons or more). For a combination of bag sizes, the site attendant must review the quantity and sizes of bags to determine the appropriate fee, if any.
  • The "Trash Pass" program does not apply to recyclable materials. Please see the Waste and Recycling webpage or ask a site attendant about acceptable recyclable materials.

Later this summer, site attendants will provide county residents with decals to place on their vehicle's windshield; the decals will be used to help confirm county residency.
