September 28, 2016, Monroe, NC – The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing for proposed improvements to East John Street and Old Monroe Road in Mecklenburg and Union Counties on Tuesday, October 11. An open house will begin at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a formal presentation at 7 p.m. Interested individuals are invited to the Stallings United Methodist Church, 1115 Stallings Road, at any time during those hours.
The purpose of the project is to improve existing and future traffic flow, operational efficiency and safety on approximately 6.5 miles of East John Street and Old Monroe Road from Trade Street in Matthews through Stallings to Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road in Indian Trail. As proposed, the project also includes improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists. The Federal Highway Administration approved the Environmental Assessment for the proposed project in July 2016.
The focus of the public hearing is the design of the proposed project. Project maps will be on display, and department staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments. Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or by November 11, 2016. The formal presentation at 7 p.m. will include an overview of the process of developing alternatives, the preferred alternative, the state-federal funding relationship, right of way acquisition and relocation procedures. The presentation and comments received will be recorded and considered in the final design process.
