Commissioners Ask for Improvements at Intersection

Posted on 11/02/15

November 2, 2015, Monroe, NC – Commissioners on Monday passed a resolution requesting that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) conduct a thorough analysis and make immediate necessary safety improvements to the intersection of New Town Road and Billy Howey Road.

The resolution states that it is the responsibility of the Union County Board of Commissioners to work with NCDOT to ensure that needed transportation improvements are addressed for our children and residents of Union County.

According to the resolution, there is limited sight distance at both approaches of Billy Howey Road to the intersection, which has caused numerous accidents. Approximately 36 school buses ride through the intersection every school day carrying between 1,500 and 1,800 students, and the buses make a total of 116 crossings each day. Traffic volumes in this area are forecasted to increase.

At this time, there are no planned or funded improvements scheduled for the intersection.
